Eco School Programme

 The Eco Code

Built in the ‘dark days’of the 1970’s the school has recently ‘come to light’ with the efforts of staff & pupils

There is in every sense the start of a “Green Revolution” at Bryngwyn

Ø      Bins are available for pupils to separate their litter. Recycling teams collect paper and plastic from our classrooms every week

Ø      Printer cartridges and ICT equipment are all now recycled. We prioritise the use of rechargeable batteries

Ø      We are trying an innovative scheme to develop ‘Printer hubs’ to reduce and rationalise the number of printers in the school. We print our work in A5 booklets instead of A4 sheets which reduces the number of copies and use of paper by a half

Ø      All lights are on motion sensors to reduce energy. We have installed some ‘light pipes’ to borrow natural daylight

Ø      We have invested in insulation jackets for pipe work in our boiler house and are looking to insulate our loft space to reduce heat loss

Ø      Quality PSE lessons inform us of our responsibilities for sustainability as global citizens

Ø      An Eco committee comprises elected pupils and staff. This forms and monitors our policies

Ø      Ms Kara Rees our Eco- Coordinator in January 2011 delivered whole school INSET on ESDGC (Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship)

Ø      We are exploring an exciting ‘Learning Gateway’ that will mean improved E mail, paperless communication & administration for parents to access information on their children.

Ø      We recycle Postage stamps for Charity

Ø      We have developed extensive natural woodland on Site. Now fenced and protected it acts as an eco habitat  which seeks to offset our carbon footprint. It is also used for outdoor education

Ø      Safe routes to school, cycle ways and bike compounds give pupils  healthy safe and clean ways to travel to school

Ø      In  terms of ICT we now buy LCD monitors rather than CRT to reduce heat emissions

We have achieved the Silver Award by forming an Eco committee, developing Eco notice boards and displays, defining an action plan and completing an environmental review. We are now trying for the Green Flag.

Every new project undertaken at school takes environmental consequences into consideration as we try to minimize the impact on our environment.
