Curriculum Overview
The Bryngwyn Learning Experience encapsulates every part of a student’s journey through Bryngwyn, recognising that every lesson, event and activity plays a meaningful role in their overall development.
Our learning experience aims to ensure that through every opportunity learners develop to become life-long learners with the tools, knowledge and understanding to play a full and active part in society. We aim to support learners to become curious in learning, displaying confidence and commitment to what they do and learning to show courage and resilience throughout their lives.
The entire learning experience at Bryngwyn, including lessons, events, activities and experiences is underpinned by the 4 purposes and will support learners to realise these purposes in becoming:

- Ambitious, capable learners…… ready to learn throughout their lives

Fundamental to our curriculum, is it’s inclusivity for all learners. We offer a range of bespoke programmes for learners with additional learning needs, whether they be more able and talented or someone with learning difficulties. Our community is proud to cater for everyone and ensure that we are able to give our best and learners are able to give their best to be the best they can be.

Our motto is ‘Giving our best, to be the best’. As a community we aim to ensure that every learner receives the very best educational experience possible. To this end everyone within our learning community is supported to give their best in:

The Curriculum is divided into 6 Areas of Learning. Each AoLE collaborates to develop a curriculum that is intertwined between multiple disciplines. Learning will come together in each AoLE to allow learners to explore the big ideas through each AoLE.

THE BIG IDEA: DW I’N DWLI AR LLANELLI During the Autumn term learners get the opportunity to explore their hometown through Geographical, Historical and Cultural perspectives. Through a range of exciting activities and challenges, learners will investigate Llanelli’s physical landscape and cultural diversity. They will find out about the major historical events and how Llanelli changed and they will discover how we show love towards the pace we live.
Learning will culminate as teams of learners bring everything together into a final presentation piece. |

THE BIG IDEA: EVOLVING WORLDS Across Science and Technology pupils will learn and experience the ‘big idea’ of change and evolution in the modern world focusing on Medicine in Science; Product development in Technology and Computers in Digital Technology.
Pupils will have the opportunity to create their own digital learning log as they explore developing Worlds through different lenses. |
MATHS & NUMERACY |
THE BIG IDEA: MASTERS OF MATHS In Mathematics and Numeracy learners will learn a range of skills where lessons will focus on ‘skills development’ leading onto the ‘mastery’ and finally, crucial ‘reflection’ on the learning process. The main focus is on the World in numbers with a range of opportunities to develop applied number skills
During this term pupils will know that Maths is for everyone and they will have the opportunity to develop their resilience and a love for problems |
LANGUAGES, LITERACY & COMMUNICATION |
THE BIG IDEA: IDENTITY In Languages, Literacy and Communication learners will learn through English, Welsh and French discovering how to communicate their own identity through each medium and in varying degrees of complexity. Their learning will involve a wide range of approaches and the exploration of existing literature.
Learners will showcase their learning journey by constructing a showpiece poem and creating a multi-medium learning poster.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS |
THE BIG IDEA: EXPLORING OPPOSITES Through the Expressive Arts learners will develop their own creativity whilst exploring the world of opposites. This terms focus will explore the use of light and dark in creating artwork and the use of sound and silence in music composition.
Leaners will use multiple instruments, technologies and techniques to create their own artwork and compositions as they build towards their final showpiece later in the year. |
HEALTH & WELLBEING |
THE BIG IDEA: FITNESS AND ME Learners will explore a range of active ways that can help lead to a healthy lifestyle. In each activity pupils will learn how this can help their personal fitness, how they can monitor and track their progress and how they can develop their own physical literacy.
Learners will develop their individual and teamwork skills through a range of approaches, discovering healthy habits that support their mental wellbeing. |

THE BIG IDEA: WONDERFUL WALES Following their exploration of Llanelli, learners will utilise their critical thinking skills to discover more about Wales and its place in the World. Through engaging with some of Wales’ rich History, discovering its unique landscape and researching the cultural heritage, learners will develop as ethically informed citizens where their learning will be brought together in a Flipgrid challenge focused on Wales in the World.
Within this framework learners will also create links with other places in the World including the development of the schools successful link with Lesotho.

THE BIG IDEA: TELL ME A STORY Learners will explore the world of storytelling to develop language, literacy and communication skills. They will delve into the origins of humans telling stories and then into myth telling learning to analyse from varying viewpoints. Across the languages learners will also develop their speaking, listening, reading & writing skills through the use of adapted fables and stories from the target language.
The skills developed will allow pupils the opportunity to develop their communication through story form by creating their own piece of writing in each target language.

THE BIG IDEA: EXPLORING OPPOSITES Learners will continue their exploration of ‘opposites’ through the concept of heroes and villains. Learners will research how heroes and villains are depicted through the medium of art and music allowing them to explore a range of skills and techniques as they develop their own original ideas and creations within these spheres, building towards their final showpiece.

THE BIG IDEA: SPORT, TEAMS AND ME Learners will gain the opportunity to develop their skills in traditional sports, covering key physical skills as well as skills that are transferrable to other walks of life. Leadership, teamwork, communication, winning and losing will all contribute to helping learners explore how sports and teams can help them grow as an individual, offering much more than just fitness.

THE BIG IDEA: IN COMPETITION WITH MYSELF! Learners will explore the world of sport by setting targets, personal goals and monitoring their own levels of performance. With opportunities to analyse their performance, challenge themselves and set realistic and aspirational targets, they will once again see how physical wellbeing can impact on their lifestyle and wellbeing in general.
